COP30 – The Swedish Example – The Power of Reforestation

Published: 12/11 2025

From barren lands to thriving forests, Sweden stands as a global example for how reforestation can restore both nature and livelihoods.

In the 19th century, much of southern Sweden was reduced to desolate heathlands after extensive deforestation. Through visionary forest management, legislation, and community-driven planting efforts, these lands were transformed into productive forests — creating economic growth, biodiversity, and climate resilience.

Today, Sweden’s reforestation story inspires global action. The same principles of sustainable forest management are key to addressing climate change worldwide — capturing carbon, replacing fossil-based materials with renewable biomass, and creating circular, low-carbon economies.

Presented by BCC and Rolf Björheden, Senior Researcher in Forest Technology at Skogforsk at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, “The Swedish Example – The Power of Reforestation” highlights how reforestation remains as a powerful tool for a sustainable future.
